selection of Tulip bulbs
Tulips are excellent for mass planting, cut flowers, rock gardens, containers and borders.
They do best in well drained soil. It is advisable not to plant
tulips in the same location in the garden year after year.
The best time to plant your tulip bulbs
is from late September to early November, but planting time can go as
late as mid December, although it may not be advised in some colder
areas. Moisture is what boosts bulb growth. A tulip bulb planted
in October will have developed a dense root system by December, and you
would be able to find healthy shoots just below the soil surface.
Tulips are pretty much dormant for the
winter and tend to come to life when the soil gets warmer and starts to
thaw in the spring. At that time, the shoot that came to life in
December begins to grow and you should see the first growth above the
surface in early spring.
In early
to mid-April the earliest tulips are beginning to bloom. Their flowering
season goes from mid to late May when Double Late Tulips and Single Late
Tulips finally open.
The leaves are also developing during
the flowering period. The bulbs and foliage play an important role in a
tulip's life cycle. The leaves convert the energy of sunlight into food
through a process known as photosynthesis. The food, in the form of
carbohydrates, is necessary for growth and flowering the following year
and is stored in the bulb. So as unsightly as the large, floppy leaves
are, they should not be cut down. Rather, the leaves should be left to
turn yellow and whither at which point they can be removed. Once the
leaves have been removed, the bulb enters into a dormancy period,
completing the annual growth cycle.
