Hosta plants have perennial roots and tender leaves. Hosta foliage, like that of most tender perennials, will die down after the first frost. When winter cold kills the foliage, remove it from the plant and mulch the bed lightly with organic mulch. Rake to remove the debris from the garden bed (to eliminate any insects, eggs, or potential diseases), then mulch the area to help keep the ground from heaving in alternate freezes and thaws. Your hostas should weather the winter without problems. New hosta leaves will emerge in the spring, after the soil warms.

Hostas are fairly easy to divide except you may need to work a little. If it is a long established plant, just take a shovel and dig right into the clump of Hosta. Try to make as clean a cut as possible. Break it off, lift it up, and plant it in a prepared hole. That simple!

If it is a less established clump, you can dig it up and separate the roots. Then you can divide it into as many plants as you can separate. Try to have at least a leaf or bud on each section of root. Then set them each in their own little hole and VOILA! Lots more hostas that will quickly be as big as the group you took it from originally. You can divide hosta in early spring or in the fall.
