Evergreens 

Most evergreens prefer moist, well-drained soil, with the exception of cedar which can tolerate wet.  Pine and spruce will not do well in wet soils, water them lightly and don't allow to much water the penetrate the soil around the trees.  All evergreens usually grow better and healthier in a sunny location.  Water your evergreens thoroughly in the fall to supply your trees and shrubs with enough water to create moisture so they can survive the winter months without drying out. Plants in open spaces need wrapping in burlap to help reduce the drying effect of winter sun and winds.  In areas where heavy snow falls occur, evergreens should be tied with twine or covered with evergreen wrap.

In the fall, the inside (3 year old needles) of Junipers and Cedars turn brown. This is particularly noticeable on newly planted cedars.  Pine and spruce drop one year’s growth of needles, on Scotch Pine 3 year needles turn yellowish then fall off. White pine normally keep only 1 or 2 year’s growth of needles.  This shedding is normal and as long as the outside tips are green the plant is quite healthy
