There
are annual, biennial, and perennial types of dianthus. Species include
Sweet Williams, carnations, and various pinks. Dianthus in general object
to extreme heat combined with humidity, they need at least a half day of sun,
and a soil that is well drained - they prefer a neutral to alkaline soil.
Some dianthus only bloom in the spring, others will bloom off and on during the
summer and some are grown as annuals to bloom all summer long. Most will
rebloom at least once if the old flowers and stems are trimmed off. Some are
more tolerant than others of hot, humid summers.
Yellowing of the foliage may be the result of
fungal problems during wet or humid weather. Full sun and good air circulation
will help limit that problem. Dianthus as a rule require good drainage, so
overwatering or excess rain combined with a heavy soil or poorly drained
location could also cause yellowing. A general rule of thumb for
deadheading perennials (cutting back the spent flowers) is to remove the flowers
and the flower stalk or stem that they are attached to, back to the main stem of
the plant.
